Typical Requirements for Obtaining an Indian Visa

Each country, including India, requires that you complete a specific application to receive an Indian Tourist Visa. There are some countries that also request that you have a passport photo in order to receive this visa. Other things that are required include proof of adequate funds and a ticket to the country.

Specifics about each of the requirements for the Indian visa can be found here.

The Application

In most cases, the application is available online through the consulate website. However, it can also be acquired at the country’ embassy or other locations.

Passport Photos

If you have the intention to cross a number of different borders while traveling, it is a good idea to have several different passport photos with you. Each of the visa applications that you fill out may require one or several of these. The photos are often taken at the border for a certain fee; however, this is not always the case. While the default photo may be able to be the standard 4 by 6 centimeters with a white background, there are some countries that now require you to have a blue or a red background.

Valid Passport

There are some countries that require your passport to have been valid for a period of six months after applying and that you have, at minimum, a single empty page inside.

Adequate Funds Proof

There are also a number of countries that now require proof of adequate funds to receive a visa; however, this is not often leveraged. The idea behind this is to stop those from ‘bumming’ around the country and then becoming a burden on the government. In some cases, this can be provided with a valid bank statement or credit card.

Onward Ticket

There is another requirement by some countries that is to have an onward ticket to show when applying for the visa to show that you will not become stuck in the country. This is somewhat of an archaic requirement and not often enforced, even by countries that still use it.

As you can see there are a number of requirements to get the necessary visa. However, keep in mind that each country is different; therefore taking the time to learn the requirements of a specific country will help ensure that you can travel with ease and no hassle regarding visiting India.
